Dear Rooters,

Just to make things a bit more fun when you are using these codes, prior to 1951 the City of Portland was given it's own code of "50".  So you will see that designation frequently in the early portions of the index.  I believe the reason for a different code had to do with Portland's large population compared to the remainder of Multnomah County, so you have "rural" Multnomah county designated as "26" and the city as "50".
