I have a friend who is actively researching Civil War & WWI veterans' 
records.  I forwarded your question to him.  This is what he suggested:
Have no idea where to find a list of Civil War Casualties, even with a 
surname it would be hard BUT they should contact a local veterans org (VFW,
Legion, DAV or ?) also contact the local VA hospital in the area (county). 
Also Rootsweb has a Civil War message board that they can ask for
information, etc.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas.
