Since I think the likelihood of two Thomas E. Rickards passing a way on the same day in the same?town is pretty small it looks to me like his SSDI entry would support that theory since those numbers show him to have been nearly 80 at the time of death. I had no idea Social Security would have anything that fast. Best bet is going to be the people Sue sent a note to on Ancestry. Hopefully maybe they will be some kind of kin. It seems on a map and in wagon travels and on census, Matney and Matneny seemed to keep close company, how ever we dont know why. Matheny have a tighter tie into the involvements of things in the beginning, my Walter was into things to, one is he was listed as president of the VernBlu gold mine in Jacksonville Oregon. If you are talking about the Into the Setting Sun, thats a one sided book. Some people present in those times were not mentioned, how ever its a good story, same as the book Skookum, By the Applegate's. I was interested because there was a McClintock who married a Cooper mentioned in this book, but after searching, it seems not to have been a person related to my McClintocks from Linn Co., Missouri. -----Original -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "On Christmas Eve, 1860, Baker arrived in Springfield to visit his step-daughter, Maria. Violating protocol, Mr. Lincoln went to the home of Maria and her husband, James Matheny. He walked in without bothering to knock. Greeting the new senator from Oregon, President-elect Lincoln said he 'would rather see Baker elected Senator than any man alive.'" wrote Baker's biographers, Harry C. Blair and Rebecca Tarshis.12 A contemporary journalist, Henry Villard wrote: "'Ned,' as he was familiarly called hereabouts in former days, was most cordially greeted, by his old friend, the President-elect, and a host of relatives and acquaintances." Villard found Baker more impressive tFhan his Springfield fried: Baker "is certainly a remarkable man and has made a remarkable career. Of restless ambition, indomitable energy, true English perseverance, fine natural parts, great elegance and popular manners, he could not well fail to make his mark."13 Falls City Cemetery, Falls City, Polk County, Oregon The Falls City Cemetery is located on Falls City Highway about 3.5 miles west of the intersection with Highway 223 south of Dallas, OR and about 1/4 mile east of Falls City. >From the highway turn north up the hill on a gravel road (looks like a driveway and is directly opposite the Old IOOF cemetery on the south side of the highway). Also look up trappers before 1843 in Oregon. Most people dont know, San Francisco was a booming town by 1820's and people were already traveling north. What I thought was interesting, of the Matney brothers - 6, 3 went to Frisco while 3 went to the East coast and walked back among the Indians and other hazards with the 1843 train. Matheny people were real good at getting into places where they could get into the lime lights of history. Matney sorta got lost in the shuffle, and Joe Meek just sorta boomed his way to eternal history. Very interesting information - also thanks. Yes, Into the Setting Sun, that's the book - thanks for giving me the title; just could not remember it. It was a good story, but I was puzzled by some of the P.O.V. as well, such as for example about who was the "first" leader of the "first" wagon train to Oregon, etc. Very interesting. Perhaps the Matneys and Matheneys were the same lines at some earlier date. Such as is probablw e with Tatham, Tatum, Tatom, and Tatem. And I have always wondered but not found any proofs that Ballards and Bullards are from the same original name. My Bullard ancestors are also interesting but not a main research for me, only as far as they connect to the Capps, Moore, McClintock and Sumner lines I am closer to. -----Original -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As others, I will make the links on my website clear for folks who visit. Any one with other links that are multi useable folks can send them to me private please. I have learned a lot recently. For those who don't know, I lost about 8 years of really doing good for some reason I was in a depression and now am all alert again, and out here in the fresh air of the high desert really helped get me out of the dumps and writers block. I don't recall last time I was at the Oregon archive but its been a while. So I was not going to try to rescue all my files and cd`s and stuff after the trailer house was trashed and every thing was scrambled, there is laundry soap power on most of the papers and cd`s the trailer did a flip and every thing inside was coated with soap or sewer from what was in the lines as the house landed almost upside down. So the file cabs were destroyed and the desk, both pc`s and the tv, my pc was stuck through a cupboard door, it still booted altho the frame of the pc was so bent the side popped off and the front was missing, I managed to save some things off the hard drive before it stopped working. Now with most things beginning to show up from all the plastic bags we filled I might be able to sorta resurrect my genealogy on this laptop. The policy with them as with all good genealogy is the same about "proof" but for something to go into their archive they do NOT require contributors to provide proof of their?lineage?or even to provide any source annotation as you will see in many of the trees that pop up on IGI in particular. When I was green at this game I combined two Melvin family files with my basic data thinking the FTM program would sort out any duplicate individuals. I still have buried deep in the branches and roots of my family file many spurious people that got into my file that way because it turns out that when merging a gedcom into your file FTM pretty much ignores any two people who are not character for character identical. Fortunately it is pretty good at questioning you if you try to enter the same person twice in your family file. But yes as to the data bases the LDS has those are very good and the new search pages are even better as they are online. Unfortunately they recently tweaked their search engine and in my opinion made it a lot harder to use though it may be better at?isolating?what you want. I am a little mystified by the search engine as I can do a general search and turn up five John Does, but if I ask the search engine to give me only first name "John" Last name "Doe" exact spelling it will return no hits. That can be frustrating if a non specific search returns a thousand hits. So as with any family data you get that has been generated by someone else; it is only as good as the sources it is generated from. I am a Bad BOY in that I often put people in my family file based solely on a census record or some other single source, but I try to always identify the fact if I am at all uncertain of the reliability of my information. My excuse is I simply don't have the resources to absolutely track down the "facts" on all these people, but in reality the truth is I am a "collector" after the big picture of how it all fits together in the broad spectrum and not overly concerned about absolutely nailing every person who goes into my family file beyond the?shadow?of a doubt.? Part of the reason for that is that there are many people in my family tree that it is quite likely there simply is no way to "prove" certain facts for, like my great great grandfather Joel Melvin. We have a date of death for him, but it is based on a statement from one of his sons who may have manufactured the date out of whole cloth. No one has ever found any record or when and where he died but that which his son son stated. Best guess is he died somewhere in the wilderness between New York and Michigan about 1831. Your folks might very well have done the same thing. There are a lot of people out there who have "disappeared" in the last twenty years for example. Once in a while one of them turns up, but if you think about it, a lot of them are still missing and may not even all have met their ends due to suspicious circumstances.
