Paulette..could that have been alkali? It foams when we wash it off the decks after we have had a alkali dust storm..

  Thanks for this information. Do you know if there is going to be any discussion of "Meek's Cutoff" at the conference? After seeing the interesting film recently, I have been reading what I can find on the subject. I have read that one of the terrible causes of many deaths on this trail was the bad water when good could not be located in the desert before they reached The Dalles. Some of the bad water was alkaline and made people sick, especially the old and the very young. As provisions were decreasing, some of the people used a white substance they found that they thought could be a substitute for baking soda in their bread. Does anyone here know more about that?
