Lynda,

If you haven't already used our County Historical Records Inventory I would spend some time looking through it at the link below. I will give you a good idea of what is still at the courthouse in Albany and also what records are held here at the State Archives in Salem.

Hello
I am new to the mailing list and need some information as to how to go about finding records for Linn County. I have a membership with Ancestry and have the census etc. I am interested in finding land records, pension records and information regarding an obscure cemetery called ??? Shilbroom, perhaps near Scio - I have a death certificate but cannot read some of it well. I hope to travel down to Oregon in the next few weeks to do some searching so any info would be really appreciated.
Thanks
Lynda

This has to be the greatest genealogy list there is. Thank you everybody. I had completely forgotten about Wilson when we were talking to our visitor yesterday. It was his death that precipitated our move to Reedsport. The way it was presented to me was "I am moving to Reedsport to take care of Grandma; you do whatever you think is right, but that is where I'll be." Well, actually that might not be a direct quote, but that was the intent. My wife didn't leave me much maneuvering room.

Did you all notice the irony of two of my wife's relatives having their "15 minutes of fame" being for illegal fishing?

My apologies for not realizing there would be some confusion between the great uncle and his father. I have senior in my file as Heinrich so didn't think about that. And Layne, of course you are forgiven, I certainly can relate to inadequate caffeine.

Now I have another mystery, I suspect the Henry caught on the Rogue was great Uncle, but since Great Grandpa lived till 1925 I suppose ti could have been him. Nah, it had to be Uncle Barney. Wonder how they got Barney out of Henry F?

Diane; I am curious about the U of O response you gave me. I must have forgotten some info about an online index?? I expected I would have to go out there to find it, but he should be listed in the Courier from Reedsport. In 1963 I am not sure what form their masthead was, either Port Umpqua or Umpqua I think. But maybe just "Courier."

Thank you again everybody.

Les C

Les, Newspaper pages are available for newspapers published between 1846-1922 are the years available for papers in Portland, Ontario,, Oregon City, Bend, Scottsburg, Coos Bay, Burns, Salem, Jacksonville, Medford and Klamath Falls. I was just hoping to see his name there, so only searched Portland and Astoria. since the death had not yet occured, it would not have been listed. You can type in one name and search all the above papers....but it comes up with a zillion entries. This is a beta site so at times in is 'resting'. Diane

Since I don't know the exact year or date of my aunt's death but know that it was sometime around 1914 or 1915 and she was a child. Is there anyway of knowing if there was some sort of epidemic in that time frame in Portland? I know she is buried in the old pioneer cemetery in Portland and I have contacted them but they only have a record of her being buried there with two of her siblings and a step mother (all in the same area).
I would really like to know the date of her death and what she died from but can't find a death record.
Her name was Verna Marie Hardwick and her parents were Noah Hardwick and Venus Howell.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the ability to visit the Library in Pendleton they have a fantastic collection of obituaries that are all indexed and there must be thousands of them. Someone, probably volunteers cut them out of newspapers and put them in binders and indexed the names. I found dozens of my relatives there.

FYI to all

Genealogybank.com has the following newspapers (not all of them, of course, but a whole bunch).

Eugene, the Oregon State Journal, 1864-1880
Lakeview, the State Line Herald, 1879-1880
Portland, The Democratic Standard, 1854-1859, New Age, 1900 and Portland New Age, 1900-1907, Oregonian, 1861-1987,

I did look for Verna Hardwick, Dale, but didn't find anything like that.

I also looked her up in the Ancestry.com site. No results there either. We know there was an influenza epidemic (the "Spanish flu") around 1918, but that's a little late for what you're talking about.

>From GenealogyBank, I find that there was a Typhoid epidemic in Centralia in 1914, and a measles epidemic at Warm Springs. Diphtheria "raged" at Brooks, and in Washington County. In 1916 there was a fear of a Diphtheria epidemic in Baker. In 1916 also, there was great concern about "infantile paralysis" (Polio). (and for the next fifty years!)

I have a whole bunch who died around 1878, in Marion County, of Diphtheria, within a week of each other.

Dale-

I don't know about Portland and what records they kept for Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties, but in Coos county I was very surprised to find a book in the Coos county court house that had a record of communicatible diseases listed by date [http://genealogytrails.com/ore/coos/death/disease-date.html]. I have only transcribed 1907-1910 for the Coos county records, but it's possible that such indexes were kept in other counties as well. I can tell you that the ledger I found is not on the Coos County Records Inventory [http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cpcoosdescrip.html] so without a personal visit looking for such a book, you might miss it. If it exists, it would at least let you know if the person was suffering from the disease near the time of their death, and if it was a widespread problem in that area.

Don't forget to check the Coos Bay papers for the period. Reedsport was close enough that the papers may well have carried the story because it was interesting.
