Dan;  As to the surname thing as far as I know there is  no real rhyme nor reason to that, it is strictly up to the woman at the time of divorce. I have a friend who has been through several husbands, but always reverts to surname of 1st one, most likely because that is the surname of her children.
Do you have the DLC history. Depending on final proving dates on those, assuming it was proved or whatever the term for completion of paper work there, it might include probate IF that is the case it should show up in the DLC book.
If their was any probate process the bare minimum is there should be some notice published in the local newspaper at that time. Unfortunately finding that can be harder than finding the courthouse records. My memory being what it is  I don't recall the circumstances of his demise; if you don't have a certain location and time for his death it is possible he just disappeared. That is the case with my maternal gg grandfather.

I have the probate.
Several good genealogist have read it too over the last
dozen years, it give no clues. I will post it when I find it.
Walter was said to have an entry in the very
first book in Modoc co for water rights, I have never seen a photo of that, but
I know he had land deals and DLC in Oregon and CA. What I can't figure is how
can a person die and just disappear when they have so many legal issues. Must be
a mention some place about that. I found the mention of Julia in an article
someplace about the Grants pass death, until then, I had no clue.
We looked for her many years. But with
several names its hard. After Walter Matney, she married Rowe, I was wondering
why?== if she applied for a divorce and after Rowe she went back to using
Matney?
