His name was Joseph Bauman. He was a logger in 1914 and for some time before that, but I don't know how long. He was a logger in 1922 and probably for some time after that, but I don't know how long. He and my grandmother lived in Rainier Oregon (Columbia County). They are in the 1920 census there, with my mother and uncle. He and my grandmother divorced in 1922. I assume he worked in a loggin camp somewhere near Rainier, but I'm not sure since I know he was gone for work for periods of time, at least sometimes, and not returning home every nite. I know he was working somewhere that he didn't come home every night in 1922. He was born in 1870 in Germany. He died in 1943 when he was living in Rainier. At that time, he had a shoe repair store. He living other places in between. I have his obit, but it's not that helpful. So, I thought I would put this out there, in case anyone researching this stuff ran across him or had some useful references. I also wanted to let you know that I have a book called "Homes in the Oregon Forest: Settling Columbia County, 1870 - 1920". It's the chronicle, with pictures, of a group of families who were loggers in Maine. They came as a group to log in Astoria, Milton Creek Valley, and inland Columbia County. Deer Island. The family I am interested in is Emerson. Other names are Perry, Corliss, Howard, Briggs, Daggett, and others. If anyone thinks there might be information for them in this book, I'll be glad to look it up. He was born in Maine of a logging family in 1853. His parents were Maryann Corliss and Joel Hamilton Howard. He married Abbie Emerson (his second wife). Emerson is the family I am interested in. He went to Oregon while she was pregnant, then she followed. Their first child, Calvin Fay Howard, was born in Rainier on Aug 14, 1877. They also had a daughter Lizzie. Herb had a younger sister, Laura, who married Charles Henry Briggs in Maine. They also came to Oregon. Charles Briggs and Herb Howard bought 80 acres on Milton creek in 1879. They soon bought more tracts. Herb Howard saves money and began his own logging. He began working on Milton creek early in the 1889s, one of several small logging operators along the creek. There are account books that Herb kept naming people who worked for him. In 1891, there was a sawmill on Dart Creek listed as Howard-Corliss Lumber Company, but it soon became Herb's mill. Herb's home farm was the land on Dart Creek where he established his sawmill. At the time of the writing of this book, 1983, Herb's son, Ira Howard, with his wife, still lives in the spacious house built 70 years ago. There's a lot of information about him. He had 5 wives. If you think this is your family, I would be glad to scan the appropriate pages and send them to you off the list. I am searching for Timothy Long...who apparently died and was buried in the Paisley cemetery in 1882. There is a Tim Long creek south of Paisley. In 1880 he and a George Pike lived together in HH34/34. According to local lore he was killed in what for years was called Deadman's Hall. The location of that building is yet to be rediscovered! He was age 51 in 1880 census and from Ireland. My main question is.....about the not proven up DLC's but yet originally filed upon? The only ones I could find in blmglo records were finished filings. You will also see photographs of the places Mackenzie traveled - as the route was retraced by local historian Nick Sheedy several years ago. Nick will speak at 5 pm in the Fireplace Room at the Hoodoo Ski Lodge. Nick's slide show - "Donald Mackenzie's Travels, 1810-1820, and the Early Fur Trade in the Old Oregon Country," will also describe Donald Mackenzie's movements with the Pacific Fur Company between 1811 and 1814, including his first trek into the Willamette Valley when he explored the river that now bears his name. You will hear about Mackenzie's careers as a fur trader for the Northwest Company, 1816-1820, and as Governor of The Hudson's Bay Company's Red River Colony, as well as put that period in historical context, discussing the early Oregon fur trade generally and giving some details on other fur traders and trappers who were in the area during that time. The presentation is free, but donations will be accepted to defray costs. Nick is from John Day, have been researching the fur trade for about 12 years a nd in doing so has traveled coast to coast and dug up obscure records at many archives. He is currently writing a book on the old hunter, John Day (1770-1820), who was an associate of Donald MacKenzie. The two explorers traveled across the continent together in 1811 and worked together again between 1816 and 1820. Mackenzie was the executor of John Day's 1820 will. Dan M ----- Original Message ----- From: Darlene To: or-roots mail list Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2012 7:52 PM Subject: Re: [or-roots] Headstone Laural hill Eugene If we go back through these messages, there is one (can't find it right now) where Dan referred to a memorial on the Find A Grave web site. It has a photo of Henry's grave stone, the name William Henry "Henry" Rogers, gives his date and place of birth, death in 1904 in Springfield, Lane Co., OR. It identifies his wife, and four children. It also has a picture of a post card sent to Gertie Brabham in Eugene (one of the children of Henry and Elizabeth) from "Father and Mother". The individual who created the memorial also has memorials for two of Henry & Elizabeth's children, with photos of obituaries, Elizabeth's death certificate, and a post card that Gertie wrote to her mother. The email address of the person who created the memorial is available on the Find A Grave page, and it seems to me that if she has that much family information, she may have more to offer if Dan were to contact her. For anyone on this list who wants to take a look, the address for Henry's memorial is: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=34106056 Also, with the information from the National Archives regarding Henry's Civil War service, which includes his location of death, combined with his widow's application for a pension in September, 1904, the issue of when he died, and where he is buried should be resolved. Seems to me that the only thing still lacking is Dan's question as to what company manufactured Henry's gravestone. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is very interesting. However, I don't think I will even try on that first day. Linda VanOrden Junction City, Oregon In a message dated 2/23/2012 9:49:44 A.M. The short video walks you through the process to determine the enumeration districts which will allow you to access the 1940 census images on April 2, 2012. _http://www.1940census.archives.gov/_ (http://www.1940census.archives.gov/) This site will be available for free, but is not a fully indexed version of the census. (Several subscriptions sites will have the fully indexed version available at a later date.) Only 39 days left to wait. I thought others with Oregon Roots might find the article interesting as well. You can see it online currently at: http://www.oregonlive.com/travel/index.ssf/2012/02/secrets_of_the_graves_cem etery.html I included both a hyperlink and the long address for those who find only one or the other works. The author of the article is: Johan Mathiesen is a Portland writer and photographer who has been documenting Oregon Territory cemeteries since 2004. In fall of 2011, Ashland Creek Press published his book, "Mad As the Mist and Snow: Exploring Oregon Through Its Cemeteries," which is available from the publisher and retailers. About 16,000 of his cemetery photographs are presented on Flickr under the nom-de-pixel, DeadManTalking. More of his cemetery writing can be found at Blogging a Dead Horse. He is working on a guide to Lone Fir Cemetery, "Nature's Immutable Laws." Enjoy!
