Thanks Denise,

I have seen this in the Oregonian. I tried to find something in the Eugene Journal at the U of Oregon archives but they did not have the film for the dates in question.

Subject: [or-roots] George Clark in The Oregonian

The story was fascinating so a quick check of The Oregonian in 1868 finds:

31 Mar 1868 pg 2
“On Friday last, as we learn by the Eugene Journal, George Clark and John Southwell of Lane county concluded to settle a personal difficulty with rifles, which resulted in the instant killing of the former. The Journal is unable to give particulars.”

The Eugene Journal may later have had more details but this one article was what showed up in Genealogy Bank.com for 1868 & George Clark.
