[or-roots] Ruth Tompkins

Clever girl, Dale!

In fact, in this case I didn’t do that, but when I just looked for Paul and Laura in the 1930 census using “tom*” I still came up empty.

Good reminder! Sometimes we get too wrapped up in what we “know” to look at what we “don’t know.”

Thanks,

Pat

Am wondering if anyone ever tried dropping the p and just using Tomkins? Enumerators often couldn't spell very well.

So, Ruth N was the dau of Paul, a machinist, 43 (born PA Dec 1856, fb PA, mb PA) m23 years to Laura, 41 (b Ohio Nov 1858, fb PA, mb Germany, four children, three living) Tompkins? Ruth, 5, born Dec 1894 in Oregon? Living in Portland, Multnomah County, in 1900?

In 1910, we find them in North Scio, Linn County:

Paul, 54, m at 34, b MD, fb MD, mb PA, machinist

Laura, 50, m at 34, four children, three living, b Ohio, fb PA, mb Germany

Rose, 15, OR, MD, OH

Paul is a problem for us. He doesn’t seem to know where he, or his parents, were born. In 1880, in Akron, Ohio, he reports that he and parents were born in New York. Laura is more consistent, except that in 1880 she reports that her father and mother were born in PA.

In 1920, we find Laura and Paul in the census in Barberton, Clark County, Washington. This time, Paul and his parents were born in PA, which matches the 1900 census.

In 1920, we find 7 “Ruth” entries born in Oregon ca 1894, mother born Ohio, who are married:

Ruth E Bowder, Portland, (father b Oregon) husband, D Frank

Ruth Frank, Portland, (father b PA) husband Aaron (1930 indicates they have been married about 13 years)

Ruth E Johnson, Seaside, (father b Oregon) husband, Oscar J (1930 has them married 10 years)

Ruth Mehlin, Burlingame, San Mater County, California (father b Wisconsin) (b 1893) husband Arthur C)

Ruth V Pierce, Lakewood Ward 3, Cuyahoga, Ohio, (father b Ohio) husband Harry L (b 1893)

Ruth Probst, LA, LA County, CA, (father b Iowa) husband Lloyd

Ruth A Van Cleve, Central Howell, Marion County, Oregon, (father b Switzerland) husband Vernon B

The only “choice” here, given the parameter of father’s birthplace, is Ruth Frank, in Portland. However, she and Aaron have a son, Richard S, who is 1 year, 11 months old. The enumeration is dated 6 Jan 1920, which means he was born ca Feb 1918.

Dang.

Using “Rose” we find three:

Rose Hunt, Moscow, Idaho, (father b PA), husband Lenord P (Lemuel in 1930, married about 12 years, oldest dau is 10)

Rose Sides/Siden/Sidor/Nevin (whew), Vallejo, Solano County, California, husband not present, mother is Cora Nevin.

Rose Zimmerman, Bethel, Kitsap County, WA, father born Ohio, husband is Hary (Harry C in 1930 married about 12 years, oldest son is 6)

So, there you are.

I guess the next questions are: Did she ever use another name – beginning with “N” her middle initial in the 1900 census?

Are you sure she ever married?

What *do* you know about her?
