It is a sign adjacent to a numeral denoting that the number is an ordinal number rather than a cardinal number, such as 7 ? Whether the ? or ? sign used varies in different languages. -----Original Message----- From: Jack Ciaccia To: or-roots mail list Sent: Sun, Sep 30, 2012 11:29 pm Subject: Re: [or-roots] Degree Symbol??? Marcus, The use of the degree symbol indicates changes in date, name or location. Hi everyone, I was asked a question today that stumped me. Go to the following link to see what I am talking about: http://archive.org/stream/spaldingmemorialcad00spal#page/n39/mode/2up There is a symbol next to some of the numbers. I would normally associate this symbol with temperature or degrees. This doesn't make sense in the context of the information. It must have something to do with the date the person was born. Anyone know what it means? Thanks!!! The use is derived from the Spanish language for denoting primary numbers in scientific writings. Regards, Jack Ciaccia Sent on the Sprint?
