Some posts over the Holidays mentioned graduation announcements with listings of the graduates.  I just ran across a large folder in the Superintendent of Public Instruction records which has lists of seniors/graduates for each school in the state for the year 1930. Most lists give the name and address of the student.

Flatbed scanners are permissible, but wand scanners are not allowed because of their potential to damage the records.  We do have a large number of patrons that use digital cameras as Les mentioned.

To answer Denise and Layne (and Les indirectly)

I work in Portland now, and yes, I would bring a digital camera. Depending on what the information is, and how it is organized, that would have a lot to do with what I would do with it. Ideally, it would be a combination of a searchable list, that had a link to the actual announcement, if it is available. For Coos county, I host the ORGenweb site, so putting information on those webpages would be fairly easy (assuming the material could be digitized). I would have no objections to doing a project for the Archives by putting the information into a format that could be added to their existing webpages.

So if you are at the archives Denise, if you could scan a few pages so we know what the material is organized like, I'll propose a solution.

I suggested camera because it has less potential for damaging the document, a flatbed scanner would be nice if there were documents like wedding certs or some such a person wanted a GOOD copy of, or a large text document a person might want to get OCR on, but my suggestion for a camera was because of the quantity. I scanned about 130 photos more or less yesterday, and I do edit as I go along so I wasn't focused on scanning entirely, but I would not be able to get that kind of speed out of my laptop and I don't think the archives would quite go for me bringing my whole work station.
With a camera, once you get a routine and a way to hold the camera steady you can snap a bunch of images, depending on your desired resolution (I always go for too high) and if you run out of room on your camera it will download to your lap top, say while you eat lunch or take a break or maybe try to round up some more documents.?
I haven't actually done this much because I usually don't find enough stuff to make it practical for me to avoid paying what it costs for Xerox copies. Of course the only time I have made it to the archives I got there about three in the afternoon and had none of my genealogy with me so had no clue what I was looking at was relevant or not.

To answer Denise and Layne (and Les indirectly)

I work in Portland now, and yes, I would bring a digital camera. Depending
on what the information is, and how it is organized, that would have a lot
to do with what I would do with it. Ideally, it would be a combination of a
searchable list, that had a link to the actual announcement, if it is
available. For Coos county, I host the ORGenweb site, so putting information
on those webpages would be fairly easy (assuming the material could be
digitized). I would have no objections to doing a project for the Archives
by putting the information into a format that could be added to their
existing webpages.

So if you are at the archives Denise, if you could scan a few pages so we
know what the material is organized like, I'll propose a solution.

Flatbed scanners are permissible, but wand scanners are not allowed because
of their potential to damage the records.  We do have a large number of
patrons that use digital cameras as Les mentioned.

Some posts over the Holidays mentioned graduation announcements with
listings of the graduates.  I just ran across a large folder in the
Superintendent of Public Instruction records which has lists of
seniors/graduates for each school in the state for the year 1930. Most lists
give the name and address of the student.

Denise and Robyn,

The very first page in the folder has a half page note that reads..

April 15, 1930
There are 278 standard high schools reporting 6342 seniors for the school year 1929-30.  Five schools did not report.  It would seem that there are about 283 standard four-year high schools in this state to date.

The reports vary from hand written pages with just a few names on them to typed carbon copies of 10 or more pages.  Some give an address others provide a column labeled "major subject"

This sounds like this will be a fun project - and it sounds like there are not the official announcements, so it would be just a listing type of information. And if there are individual pages for each school, the number of pages has to be more than 278 in total.

I just ran across a large folder in the Superintendent of Public Instruction records which has lists of seniors/graduates for each school in the state for the year 1930. Most lists give the name and address of the student.

This sounds like this will be a fun project - and it sounds like there are not the official announcements, so it would be just a listing type of information. And if there are individual pages for each school, the number of pages has to be more than 278 in total.

The very first page in the folder has a half page note that reads..

April 15, 1930
There are 278 standard high schools reporting 6342 seniors for the school year 1929-30.  Five schools did not report.  It would seem that there are about 283 standard four-year high schools in this state to date.

The reports vary from hand written pages with just a few names on them to typed carbon copies of 10 or more pages.  Some give an address others provide a column labeled "major subject"

To answer Denise and Layne (and Les indirectly)

I work in Portland now, and yes, I would bring a digital camera. Depending on what the information is, and how it is organized, that would have a lot to do with what I would do with it. Ideally, it would be a combination of a searchable list, that had a link to the actual announcement, if it is available. For Coos county, I host the ORGenweb site, so putting information on those webpages would be fairly easy (assuming the material could be digitized). I would have no objections to doing a project for the Archives by putting the information into a format that could be added to their existing webpages.

So if you are at the archives Denise, if you could scan a few pages so we know what the material is organized like, I'll propose a solution.

Flatbed scanners are permissible, but wand scanners are not allowed because of their potential to damage the records.  We do have a large number of patrons that use digital cameras as Les mentioned.

I have been doing some work with the 1905 Lane County Military Census and suddenly realized that?I?did n't know why it wa s called a Military Census and not just a state census. ? Does anyone know why?

For those interested, I use Abbyy Screenshot reader for doing a lot of my OCR work. It doesn't work well for handwriting, but I am very happy with what I get if it is typed text. I still proofread what it produces, and then verify names against other sources as much as possible, as there are always those typos that were in the original text - there I leave the original version but include the correction so that both forms are available and searchable.

Abbyy has several applications, but this tool is under $30 and anything that can be seen on your screen can be OCR'd. Abbyy.com

That is the current program I have on my computer, I just can't figure out how to get the scan into it for recognition purposes.
Ah well, don't have much time to mess with that kind of stuff until I get a few thousand more photos scanned.

I should never say I hope to do something <smile>.  Today didn't work out
for scanning some of the graduation documents but I'll try next week.  It
sounds like very interesting data for a time period helpful to my own

Don?t always count on scanners.
If you want better scans of news papers, and black n white photos; use gray scale 256 colors. 
Try it.  Also set the resolution to scale.

In this day of expanding info on the internet, you just never know what 
may pop up, even if you searched for the same thing last week -- and 
sometimes it can come from the strangest places --

SAIF's CompNews magazine for the Spring of 2009 has an article on and 
picture of Dorothy Burr, and a bit of history on husband Don's 
accident,  this apparently being the oldest active claim with SAIF.

Dorothy has recently moved into adult foster care from her prior 
assisted care facility, and I have lost track of her current location, darn!

So every little bit helps -- I can't imagine trying to get claims data 
from SAIF by simply asking (nor had I thought about it - hint, hint).

PS: I also used a digital camera to make images of documents this fall 
at the SLC FHL, and found it exceedingly quick, and convenient, even for 
the online stuff -- just a quick "screen shot" -- and, if you haven't

now availalble online right to your desk top, even from home.

the runaround. 

As for digital cameras the new ones while there pictures 

are great, many programs can not use then as the resolution 

is to big and you cannot get them down to a useable resolution.

Sometimes I want a hi-res photo, like if I'm copying real photographs, 
but the vast majority of pics I take are a few hundred KB or less. It's 
my choice -- 240 KB makes a nice image on my monitor.

I was refering to the Pixals mine will not go below 

1280? ?By 16?? and many programs cannot use 

anything over 800 by 1200 pixals.

Another option if you happen to be buying a flatbed scanner or have some money to burn is the light version of adobe photo shop. If spending money is not an option you might try Picasa though I think it is a lot less user?friendly?than Adobe, but maybe I am just?prejudiced because I am familiar with the latter.?
The reason I mentioned purchasing a scanner is I have gotten two or three different versions of adobe bundled with scanners I have purchased. Getting a $70 dollar program bundled with a ten dollar scanner was one of my better deals. I am not sure about that price, I was thinking it was more like $350 for elements and three times that for the full blown photoshop. That price I found one place while adobe themselves want $80 dollars just to download an upgrade of my older version.
I really like adobe because I have gotten to be a real wizard at restoring photos.
I scan everything high res as a tif file, than go in straighten, clean up, sharpen, adjust color or whatever a pic needs that is doable and ten resave the tif and then save it as jpg for quicker viewing, If my jpg file is really big say a meg or more I will either downsize and save or maybe save the downsize as a?separate?file.
I currently have a little over 5,000 scanned images on my hard drive for a little over 45 gigs of scans, many of them I have scanned at ridiculously high resolution though I don't think I have any 100 meg scans on this computer. The first time I scanned an image that extreme the file took up half my hard drive.

Sorry to cut in, but a good option is Corel's photopaint for a fraction of Photoshop's cost. It does pretty much all the things my old and expensive Photoshop did for less than the cost of the upgrade.

Yeah, some company marketing duds try to make us think, like the current 
ad on TV, that Bigger & Faster is Better -- not necessarily.  When you 
buy one of those big mega pixel cameras, the one thing you want to check 
is how small a pic will it take -- mine will go down to 640 x 480, as 
well as them high pixel shots that are only good for cropping out a 
little section or 11x 17 prints.

Yeah, some company marketing duds try to make us think, like the current ad
on TV, that Bigger & Faster is Better -- not necessarily.  When you buy one
of those big mega pixel cameras, the one thing you want to check is how
small a pic will it take -- mine will go down to 640 x 480, as well as them
high pixel shots that are only good for cropping out a little section or 11x
17 prints.

Reminds me of a story --   

A C-130, a prop driven cargo plane,
was lumbering along when a cocky F-16 flashed by.

What Hank says is all too true; the tendency of all manufacturers to think that more bells and whistles on every new thing (including software) is the only way to go. Like cell phones, I don't object to them including a camera and say a phone book and calculator and i actually take advantage of one of the free card games to entertain myself or help myself "be patient" quite regularly, but the other 7,467 functions or whatever are in the nine count them 9 menus on my simple cell phone (It was the simplest one AT&T had when I bought it) are completely useless to me and all they do is frustrate me when I need to find my calculator.
Now I don't consider myself "Technology challenged" though my IT support/Son might dispute that in spite of my having taught him enough computerse to make him find entry classes in Junior college a waste of his time, but the menu on my current camera defeats me, I know there are certain functions it will allow me to change, but beyond switching between still mode and video and using flash suppression or forced flash I am at a loss.
I say all this in prelude to pointing out that the fact your camera won't take an image less than 1280 X 1600 doesn't preclude using those images, it just means you have to massage the image. One thing you need to keep firmly in vies is the pixels are the measure of how much screen space an image uses and that depends on the resolution of the image. I scan at between 800 and 1200 pixels per inch depending on how important it is for me to get a good product. I routinely use 1200 for scanning slides and mini negatives as that allows me to get a half way decent product, though I doubt I will be printing any 8" X 10" prints that way. My point is at the 800 pixels resolution I scanned in a historic document, well a class 1946 reunion photo caption, and ended up with a 4800 by 5729 pixel image. I am guessing that image would not meet the criteria for Glen's purposes. So I went online and found this site;

I selected the above mentioned image from my puter and typed 480 and 573 in the respective boxes. ?I try to reduce image by even whole amounts one fourth one half or whatever though that may not be necessary any more, but the important thing is to keep the ratio the same as your original image. I am not sure how much trouble you ?might have finding that out, I now you can open paint and on the "Image" menu click on "attributes" and it will tell you, I am not sure what the new version of paint has but it probably still does this.

I use a free application called Photoscape (see photoscape.org) that has a lot of the editing options of the paid applications, and it has one great one called batch editing. 

Using Photoscape, I can take a lot of pictures of headstones (or documents) using the default settings on my camera, then bring them into the editor and crop them to show the details I want to retain. Then I can take these cropped photos and load them in the batch editor and from there, reduce the output to the preferred size (either in pixels, percentages of the original, or any other criteria I need) and rename them all with a prefix (I use sm-) so that I know that the image has been resized. These smaller versions of the originals are what I then post on Find-a-grave or other websites. I can then share the original images with people who have need of the larger size (such as family members or researcher who want to enlarge the image to verify details).


I also wanted to remind/educate this group as to the difference in file formats... If you direct your camera to save things in Raw, or TIF mode, then if you edit the photo (such as cropping it, changing the contrast, etc), all of the original quality is retained. That is NOT the case with Jpg files. If you do not have the ability to direct the software to preserve the jpg at 100%. If you save a jpg file to the same file, the quality will be reduced.

The folder is arranged alphabetically by county.? Within each county, the schools are primarily arranged alphabetically by the city or town that the school is in rather than by the name of the school.? I scanned the approx. 30 pages of Lane County records.? Attached is a sample.

I made it to the Archives this afternoon and scanned 51 pages covering the following counties.

 

Coos County

Crook County

Curry County

Douglas County

Wheeler County

Yamhill County

 

Appreciated Barbara?s hints about finding the file within the Supt of Education correspondence files.  A single file folder with Seniors and then pages within in order by County and then within the county by school.

 

A couple of the lists were handwritten and less complete than the format had requested.  Also interesting to me was the major subject of ?Commerce?.  Not even a word commonly used today in our high schools.

While at the State Archives yesterday, I took a look at the file that Layne was talking about concerning a statewide list of the Seniors in 1930.  If anyone else goes to take a look at it, ask at the desk, and they will bring you the box that the folder is in.  In the box the folder is filed under "Seniors." The box is made up of correspondence with the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

 

The folder is arranged alphabetically by county.  Within each county, the schools are primarily arranged alphabetically by the city or town that the school is in rather than by the name of the school.  I scanned the approx. 30 pages of Lane County records.  Attached is a sample.

While at the State Archives yesterday, I took a look at the file that Layne was talking about concerning a statewide list of the Seniors in 1930.? If anyone else goes to take a look at it, ask at the desk, and they will bring you the box that the folder is in.? In the box?the folder?is filed under "Seniors."?The box is made up of correspondence with the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
?
The folder is arranged alphabetically by county.? Within each county, the schools are primarily arranged alphabetically by the city or town that the school is in rather than by the name of the school.? I scanned the approx. 30 pages of Lane County records.? Attached is a sample.

Been trying to track down the ancestry of my cousin in law Arlen Swearingen and his Dad and sisters are giving me fits. I find Arlen and his Mom and Dad in 1940 in Drain C. C. Swearingen 35 b OR Eyethel (yes, that really is the way she spelled it) age 32 b MN, Geneva 13 and Mildred 12. But 1940 give no clues as to marriage date so I went looking for them in 1930 and have about concluded they dodged that one. In 1910 and 1920 CD is with if parents Ora and Agnes listed as Cortise in 1910 and Cordice? in 1920, but my understanding is his name was actually Cortes which is Arlen's middle name.
I saved all of his kin in Drain in 1930 which left about two pages out of my family file. I haven't tried the immediate surroundings of Drain yet, but the one clue I have found is they are lving in "Deerhorn" in 1933, at least according to an item in the RG that talks about Geneve and Mildred returning home there from a visit to Cornvalley.
I tried both Leaburg and Thurston precincts but no sign of them and I don't find a listing for Walterville in 1930 and since ther are some Pepiots in the McKenzie highway listing of Thurston I figure that should be the Walterville area. The McKenzie Hwy prct is up the river at McKenzie bridge I think because there are a bunch of Belknaps in it.
I have obits for CD's wife, father and brother Virgil and something or other relation Archie Morningstar, at least I assume there is a connection since Archie has a sister married to a Swearingen and the Morningstars and Swearingens are neighbors most of the time.?
So if someone could direct me to the right 1930 Census I would be very grateful, if I know where to look I can get the image myself if there is one. Of course if someone came up with CD's obit and or marriage date that would be gravy, but I am about ready to write that off.?
For as much stuff as Family Search has available now it is amazing how many giant holes I still have in my family file.
Speaking of Family search folks with Oregon ancestors need to check out some of the stuff on there if they haven't Douglas Co deed index is?available?and early deeds are too, though I don't think they are searchable?
Go down to the list of place names and click on United States and a whole passel of stuff will pop up; scroll down to the Oregon listing and anything with a camera icon next to it is images.

I checked my files but do not have Swearingen or Morningstars in them. 

The Belknaps were all up and Down the McKenzie and were a branch of 

our Belknaps that were at Bellfountain, the Pepiots were related to the 

Belknaps. 

Incidently the President of the Northwest Chapter Oregon California Trails 

Association is a Belknap Descendent also.

Thank you Linda, I didn't know Edwards was another name for Walterville. Your answer was a little frustrating; "why the heck did Ancestry just give me the street address: 'Ewards Lane'" but I looked for Searingen on Family History ans sure enough there they were except Family Search only gave me the street address, then i looked a little closer and saw the commma between Edwards and Lane. Okay major face slap for Les.
Here I was thinking the census taker in that neighborhood had such neat clear handwriting finding them would be a snap if they were there and of all the names for him to totally butcher it had to be my guy!
Thanks again, that is great, I should mention I have the file from Rootsweb posted by Barbara Jones if that is the file you were going to get for me. She has the family pretty tight down to the generation above Cortes, but just census info on his generation.

I checked my files but do not have Swearingen or Morningstars in them. 

The Belknaps were all up and Down the McKenzie and were a branch of 

our Belknaps that were at Bellfountain, the Pepiots were related to the 

Belknaps. 

Incidently the President of the Northwest Chapter Oregon California Trails 

Association is a Belknap Descendent also.

I have an Oregon question for a change; 


Been trying to track down the ancestry of my cousin in law Arlen Swearingen and his Dad and sisters are giving me fits. I find Arlen and his Mom and Dad in 1940 in Drain C. C. Swearingen 35 b OR Eyethel (yes, that really is the way she spelled it) age 32 b MN, Geneva 13 and Mildred 12. But 1940 give no clues as to marriage date so I went looking for them in 1930 and have about concluded they dodged that one. In 1910 and 1920 CD is with if parents Ora and Agnes listed as Cortise in 1910 and Cordice? in 1920, but my understanding is his name was actually Cortes which is Arlen's middle name. 


I saved all of his kin in Drain in 1930 which left about two pages out of my family file. I haven't tried the immediate surroundings of Drain yet, but the one clue I have found is they are lving in "Deerhorn" in 1933, at least according to an item in the RG that talks about Geneve and Mildred returning home there from a visit to Cornvalley. 


I tried both Leaburg and Thurston precincts but no sign of them and I don't find a listing for Walterville in 1930 and since ther are some Pepiots in the McKenzie highway listing of Thurston I figure that should be the Walterville area. The McKenzie Hwy prct is up the river at McKenzie bridge I think because there are a bunch of Belknaps in it. 


I have obits for CD's wife, father and brother Virgil and something or other relation Archie Morningstar, at least I assume there is a connection since Archie has a sister married to a Swearingen and the Morningstars and Swearingens are neighbors most of the time.? 


So if someone could direct me to the right 1930 Census I would be very grateful, if I know where to look I can get the image myself if there is one. Of course if someone came up with CD's obit and or marriage date that would be gravy, but I am about ready to write that off.? 


For as much stuff as Family Search has available now it is amazing how many giant holes I still have in my family file. 


Speaking of Family search folks with Oregon ancestors need to check out some of the stuff on there if they haven't Douglas Co deed index is?available?and early deeds are too, though I don't think they are searchable? 


Go down to the list of place names and click on United States and a whole passel of stuff will pop up; scroll down to the Oregon listing and anything with a camera icon next to it is images. 


I had an interesting time browsing the Deeds last night, found a whole bunch of Melvins there who are not kin as far as I know.

I didn't save those Eugene, but the given names were James and John if I remember right and the land transfers were in the '30's or '40's. I want to wrap this swearingen thing up and then I need to try and finish the siding on the north wall of my breakfast nook, but when I come in to warm up ?from that I can do some research on these guys and see if they connect to your line.

at the Monarch Motor Hotel Clackamas we hope to have a website up for t hat
