Hello all,

I am a graduate student in need of your collective wisdom and
expertise. I'm doing a project involving recreational impacts to
archaeological sites and strategies for protecting them--specifically,
signage in the sites' vicinities. I am trying to find any information
that supports or
discredits the use of signs to protect sites from looters and/or
recreationalists (e.g., ATV riders and bikers), especially on public
lands. Ideally, any long-term monitoring studies would be useful (for
any kind of site protection strategy), but all sources/ideas are welcome
and much appreciated. It seems that there are two camps: if you put a
sign up, it attracts negative attention to the sites (and they're
harmed); or, signs can educate the public and sites will be
protected--now I'd like to find some substantial data.
