It's all about watery graveyards and the treacherous Columbia River bar
that created them, starting next weekend in Astoria and environs.
Since 1792, about 2,000 vessels have sunk in and around the bar. One of
them was the Peter Iredale. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
running aground of the four-masted bark, the Columbia River Maritime
Museum and Clatsop County Historical Society in Astoria, Fort Stevens
State Park in Hammond, and Cape Disappointment State Park and Ilwaco
Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, Wash., have scheduled events during Graveyard
of the Pacific Shipwreck Week, Saturday, Oct. 21-Sunday, Oct. 29.
Hear talks on shipwrecks, the challenges of navigating the Columbia
River, rescue operations in the region and how Cape Disappointment got
its name. At the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, perched on a
200-foot-high cliff in Cape Disappointment State Park, view the Columbia
River Bar shipwrecks exhibit, a Fresnel lighthouse lens and a
100-year-old lifesaving service boat. More exhibits are at the various
museums. Don't miss the shipwreck stories and sea chanteys at the
maritime museum and Cape Disappointment State Park. Hours: Times and
locations vary. More info: 1-800-451-2542, www.funbeach.com;
