[OR_Archaeology] Free Historic Preservation Training & Info Session in Ontario Sept. 25-27

HERITAGE TRAINING SET FOR ONTARIO

The Oregon Heritage Programs Division of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will hold a series of free training and information sessions Sept. 25-27  at the Four Rivers Cultural Center, 676 S.W. 5th Ave., in Ontario.

There will be a general introduction to the functions and programs offered by the division, including the historic cemetery, certified local government, National Register of Historic Places, and grants
programs. Also, the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries will conduct a public meeting from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 26 which includes a representative of the Oregon Mortuary and Cemetery Board discussing cemetery certification, fees and laws. 

The cemeteries commission will also offer a workshop on ideas and tools for interpreting historic locations to capture heritage tourism. The training will last from 9 a.m.-4 p.m Sept. 27. Also, the State Historic Preservation Office will offer a session focusing on local historic preservation efforts.  Topics will include building community support for historic preservation, how to start a
local preservation program, and listing properties and historic districts in the National Register of Historic Places. The sessions are free and open to the public.
