OAS LECTURE on Rock Art October 7, 2008

The Dalles-Deschutes region contains the largest concentration of rock
art in the Pacific Northwest and is notable in North America. Much of
the original recording was done by Oregon Archaeological Society
volunteers, notably Malcolm and Louise Loring.

An October 7th lecture, sponsored by the Oregon Archaeological Society,
will feature a recap of the rock art explorations of pioneers in the
field that largely occurred from the 1920s to 1980s. Over the past six
years, D. Russel Micnhimer and LeeAnn Johnston undertook the difficult
job of searching for, re-recording, and photographing these rock art
discoveries. They will show several hundred slides and offer commentary
about the condition and significance of the petroicons.

In addition, Ms. Johnston will make her photo albums available for
viewing. She meticulously matched the images in her photos with the line
drawings the Lorings* made decades ago during their rock art
explorations. A number of the spectacular Loring and Loring rubbings
made of images at sites now submerged along the Columbia River, will
also be available for viewing. This is a rare opportunity to see these
rubbings that are on temporary loan from an institutional archive.

The lecture will be held in the OMSI auditorium at 7:45 PM, and is free
and open to the public. The presentation is preceded at 7 PM by a
general business meeting, which is also open to the public.
