Bob Mierendorf, Park Archaeologist at the North Cascades National Park Service, will speak at the November Oregon Archaeological Society meeting being held on the first Tuesday evening of the month. Mierendorf will talk about the traditional use of the High Cascades by the indigenous Salish .

Archeological investigations over the last several decades have recovered new evidence showing that native Northwest people began using the North Cascades high elevations at least 9,000 calendar years ago. These discoveries will be addressed as well as how they have changed perceptions of Northwest cultures.

Mierendorf was the first national park-based archeologist in the Pacific Northwest. He has done field archeology in British Columbia and several states, including Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

His current research focus seeks to increase the understanding of the anthropology and archeology of indigenous Northwest mountain-oriented peoples, mountain ecology, paleoecology, and the natural history of the North Cascades.

The presentation is at OMSI, 7:45 PM, and is free and open to the public. The talk is preceded at 7 PM by a general business meeting, which is also open to the public.
