Summary
OCDT8652 - Roseburg or Medford

As an Archaeology Specialist this position will be the staff expert in
archaeology, traditional cultural properties and general cultural
resources.  This position will analyze and document impacts of projects
and other Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) activities on
archaeological sites, traditional cultural properties and structures. 
Also will coordinate avoidance, minimization or mitigation of project
impacts with the project team, SHPO and other non-ODOT stakeholders.

Effective November 1, 2008, this position is expected to receive a 3.2%
Cost of Living Adjustment increase in salary.

Employee will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business; you

Generally, work is performed in the field and requires frequent travel
by car within the Region and occasional to Salem to attend meetings or
perform field work.  

Field work involves exposure to hazards of traffic as well as hot and
cold weather.  
Responsibilities

Maintain records; account for archaeological work; prepare estimates. 


Perform research to assess the effects of transportation projects on
archaeological resources, traditional cultural properties and general
cultural resources in accordance with historic preservation laws and
regulations.

Research includes conducting archaeological and other reconnaissance
surveys, document searches and contact with Native American
representatives, planners, historians and preservationists to aid in
determining significant properties.  These findings, plus the assessment
of project effects and mitigation, are included in technical reports and
related Determinations of Eligibility and Section 106 reports. 

Establish and maintain liaison for the section with other ODOT
personnel and various state and federal agencies whose expertise or
jurisdiction is related to cultural resource management, such as the
State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Native American tribal
organizations.

Conduct fieldwork to help in the assessment of archaeological needs for
a project.  

Qualifications

In your cover letter and resume you must clearly describe how you meet
the below qualifications.

Two years of environmental analysis or resource project management
experience and a Bachelor's degree with 30 quarter or 20 semester hours
in an environmental science, a physical science, a natural science,
engineering, or a closely-related field. 

Three additional years of environmental analysis or resource project
management experience directly related to Archaeology may substitute for
the Bachelor's degree.  

Note: preference may be given to individuals that meet the Secretary of
the Interior*s guidelines for a professional archaeologist and have a
Master*s Degree in Anthropology.

This position coordinates with a variety of regulatory agencies,
consultants, tribal organizations, and other ODOT Project Teams, and
other ODOT divisions.  (a) Describe your training, experience, and role
in communicating with and coordinating among a number of specialists,
agencies, and groups with diverse concerns.  What groups and/or agencies
were involved?  How did you assure that your efforts were successful? 
Include in your response any experience you may have in coordinating
directly with Indian Tribal governments or representatives. (b) Describe
your knowledge and experience implementing federal regulations regarding
the protection of archaeological and cultural resources.
 
A significant function of this position is performing research to
assess the effects of transportation projects on archaeological
resources and traditional cultural properties.  Please describe your
