Researcher Training with OR SHPO Archaeological Inventory Database
(SHPO Archaeology Library)

Over the last few years SHPO has created an integrated "Archaeological Inventory Database"--a computerized database consisting of digitized maps of known cultural resources and previous archaeological surveys; scanned archaeological site forms and survey reports; a bibliographic database; General Land Office (GLO) survey maps and orthographic photo maps; and various periodicals and publications dealing with Oregon and Pacific Northwest Archaeology. The goal is to provide researchers with a computer terminal at the Salem SHPO that contains a comprehensive database for researchers to fully investigate their area of interest.

FREE TRAININGis now being offered by SHPO to assist qualified archaeological researchers in accessing and utilizing these databases effectively. This training will be optional for a few months in 2008 and 2009, but will subsequently be mandatory/pre-requisite for all researchers requesting appointments. This future requirement is to help reduce time SHPO Archaeologists currently dedicate (almost daily) to orienting new researchers on the computer database as well as optimizing the researchers time and energies spent during their appointment. The goal of the training is to provide researchers with the fundamental tools, through lecture and guided computer exercises, to make use of the computer database quickly and efficiently.
