HISTORIC PORTRAITS FEATURED IN NEW HIGH DESERT EXHIBIT

"Faces of the High Desert Heartland", a portrait photography exhibit that draws viewers into daily life in rural Oregon from 1895 through 1955, opens Dec. 17 at the High Desert Museum.

These portraits chronicle the people, industry and community life of Harney County from a ladies' hunting party, Paiute families and firemen, to a wake, cyclist, pharmacist and the Harney County Junior Symphony on their parade float. The exhibit is drawn from tens of thousands of
negatives discovered in the attic of the former R.W. Heck Studio in Burns in 1961.

"It is a visual saga, with virtually every type of picture that a small-town photographer on the High Desert would take," said Bob Boyd, the museum's curator of western history. "They reflect the pleasure of picnics, the triumphs of the local basketball team and the disasters of fire and flood. Town views, homesteaders, rodeo riders and buckaroos, wonders and blunders of local life, weddings and funerals, homes and stores round out the collection."

The images were produced over 60 years by John McMullen, Rufus Heck, O.W. Lubcke and Bob Lemons. The exhibit was produced by Thomas Robinson

The High Desert Museum is five minutes from Bend on South Highway 97. For more information, contact 541-382-4754 or visit www.highdesertmuseum.org
