Hello! The U.S. Coast Guard is looking at offering a 24-hour HAZWOPER training on the Oregon coast in March 2009. This course will be open to Tribal cultural and natural resource personnel as well as local responders. Potential dates are March 8-10 and March 24-26. The course will cover broad issues pertaining to hazard recognition at spill response sites and will familiarize participants with the typical mitigation equipment and activities of an oil or hazmat spill. The purpose of the class is to provide workers working at hazardous sites with the tools to identify different types of hazards as well as suggest possible precautions and protective measures to reduce or eliminate hazards at the work place. Completion of a 24-Hour HAZWOPER course is required by the government for all personnel visiting an Uncontrolled Hazardous Waste Site (e.g., an oil spill).Participants in this training will receive a 24-hour HAZWOPER certification card (Hazardous Materials Technician Level, 29 CFR 1910.120). This will allow the cardholder to be on site during an oil spill/hazardous material release to help with the response. The training will also include a session on the Incident Command System (ICS), the management structure utilized for oil spill and hazardous material release responses, and familiarize participants with roles and responsibilities during response activities. We need to get at least 25 attendees together to hold the training, so please let me know ASAP if you are interested in this opportunity. Have a great day,Allison
