Cobble Chopper sites are well known in the Pacific Northwest but until recently such sites have received little attention in the Lower Columbia region. Within the Vancouver Lake/Lake River Archaeological District (VLLRAD), archaeologists have identified three basic kinds of sites: large residential sites with house pits, smaller seasonal habitation sites, and activity areas (e.g., Dunnell et. al. 1974, Skolnik et al. 1979, Kent 1982, Wessen 1983, Onat 1997). This presentation will argue for the need to include cobble chopper sites as a discreet site type in the VLLRAD. These sites exhibit a widespread, low-density, surface distribution of artifacts and, as a result, current methods of identification, delineation and interpretation of cobble chopper sites are inadequate. Based on a
recent study at a cobble-chopper site in the Vancouver Lake area (45CL568), we recommend specific methods for addressing these inadequacies.

Hope to see you there!
