“Let Sleeping Bears Lie - Archaeology in the Dark Zone of Lava Tube
Caves in Southwest Washington” is the title of an October 6 lecture
being sponsored by the Oregon Archaeological Society. Cheryl Mack, an
archaeologist for the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, will be the
presenter.

The Gifford Pinchot National Forest contains numerous lava tube caves,
a few of which show evidence of use by native people. Isolated
artifacts in the far reaches of eight very small lava tubes, have raised
the question of whether prehistoric people were also exploring these
caves. Analyses pertaining to the use of these artifacts have proven
interesting, particularly as they relate to ethnographic accounts which
describe the hunting of hibernating bears within the lava tubes.

The presentation is at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) at
7:45 PM, and is free and open to the public. The talk is preceded at 7
PM by a general business meeting, which is also open to the public
