at Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History

Jon M. Erlandson, Ph.D., Executive Director, Museum of Natural and Cultural History

Viking peoples settled Iceland in AD 871, creating a unique society in the North Atlantic . In the Icelandic Sagas, the site of Hrisbru and the Mosfell Valley was the home of the famous Viking warrior-poet Egil Skallagrimsson. Erlandson will summarize seven seasons of excavation that revealed the secrets of a Viking longhouse, a small church, a unique cremation feature on
a mound shaped like a symbolic ship, and the historical foundations of the sagas.
