The Anthropology Department at Portland State University presents the
November Archaeology First Thursday Lecture:

“Buried Behind the Big House: Remote Sensing and Slave Graves and
Cabins in the Middle Atlantic”

by Thomas P. Barrett, PhD, RPA (ICF Jones & Stokes)

Please join us this Thursday, November 5th, 4 pm in Room 41 of PSU's
Cramer Hall (1721 SW Broadway, 97201)

The graves and cabins of enslaved African-Americans are important
archaeological features, significant cultural resources, and
unfortunately, all-too-often lost to time.  This presentation
discusses my efforts to identify and interpret these features in
Prince George’s County, Maryland - using archival information,
standard archaeological methods and relatively novel remote sensing
techniques.  First, a context for these features is given in the
cultural-historical setting of the region.  Next, the specific
regulatory environment of the County is reviewed, which provided the
unique opportunity to pursue this research.  Finally, several specific
examples are presented and summarized that reveal the potentials, and
limitations, of such study in the Middle Atlantic region of the United
States.
