Just a FYI that NPS has produced a new publication that may be of interest to Oregon archaeologists--

Fruitful Legacy: A Historic Context of Orchards in the United States, with Technical Information for Registering Orchards in the National Register of Historic Places

Authored by Susan Dolan, NPS historical landscape architect in the Pacific West Regional Office, this book is an important new history of the physical development of the US orchards from 1600 to the present day. The book examines the place of orchards in the National Parks in the larger context of American horticulture, and encourages the nomination of these potential cultural landscapes to the NRHP.

The book provides information about the development of the most common types of orchards and fruit trees, describing the events, important individuals, patterns of development and spatial characteristics associated with these horticultural properties. In providing a historic context study of NP orchards the book provides a basis for the initial evaluation of old orchards, and can support subsequent management decisions leading to their preservation.

The NPS Park Historic Structures and Cultural Landscapes Program funded the publication and you can purchase a copy at the US Government Bookstore at
