“Science, Diversity, and Our Colonial Past: Historical Archaeology
at Station Camp/Middle Village and the Fort Vancouver Village” is the
title of the March 2 lecture sponsored by the Oregon Archaeology
Society. Dr. Douglas Wilson, the Pacific West Region’s historical
archaeologist for the National Park Service and archaeologist at Fort
Vancouver, is the featured speaker.

Wilson’s talk will explore the earliest history of the Pacific
Northwest from the vantage of two archaeological sites. Excavations at
the Chinook Middle Village (Lewis & Clark's "Station Camp") at the old
pioneer salmon cannery town of McGowan revealed an amazing collection of
artifacts reflecting the relations between the Chinook and the fur
traders at the dawn of Pacific Northwest History. Excavations at the
Fort Vancouver Village carry on this story of early contact through the
diverse peoples that lived at and worked at Fort Vancouver. The story
at these two sites is the story of indigenous peoples and immigrants
literally reshaping the west.

In addition to his work with the National Park Service, Dr. Wilson
directs the Northwest Cultural Resources Institute, which integrates
university students with professional archaeologists, and volunteers to
provide new scientific and historical research while interpreting
National Park Service sites. He also teaches the joint National Park
Service/Portland State University/ Washington State University Vancouver
archaeological school at Fort Vancouver and is an Adjunct Associate
Professor of Anthropology at Portland State University. His
publications are numerous.

The presentation is at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) at
7:45 PM, and is free and open to the public. The talk is preceded at 7
PM by a general business meeting, which is also open to the public
