Historian, Gary Gitzen, will be the speaker at the Oregon Archaeological
Society meeting on May 4, 2010. Gitzen is the author of Francis Drake in
Nehalem Bay 1579, Setting the Historical Record Straight that has
received both academic and scholarly acceptance. The book is the
culmination of over twenty years of research into Francis Drake’s
Pacific coast landing site, after the former Director of the Tillamook
Pioneer Museum, Wayne Jensen and others, reasoned that Drake made a land
survey on Neahkahnie Mountain on Oregon’s north coast. Gitzen became
caretaker of Jensen’s personal library and research papers and
continued to research Drake’s Pacific coast landing site.

After a successful career in the high-tech industry, history became
Gitzen’s full-time vocation. His interests include Oregon coast
aboriginal natives, shipwrecks, logging, drift-net fishing and cheese
making. He lives in Wheeler, Oregon and is the author of numerous
history articles for local newspapers and is an active participant in
the Nehalem Valley Historical Society .

The presentation is at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) at
7:45 PM, and

is free and open to the public. The talk is preceded at 7 PM by a
general business

meeting that is also open to the public
