Dear Colleagues;

I have been most fortunate to have been selected to serve on the Editorial Board of American Archaeology magazine- a quarterly magazine produced by the Archaeological Conservancy whose goal is to educate, inform, and involve the general reader who has an interest in American archaeology.

I thought this could be a wonderful opportunity to get the news out about Pacific Northwest archaeology, tribal, and cultural heritage! Here are some examples of what the magazine is looking for:

* Topics for feature articles- most of the articles are written by professionals and illustrated by professional photographers & artists. However, they don't know what is hot, exciting, and happening in our neck of the woods. Please let me know of any topics you believe would benefit and/or has not had the proper exposure to the general public interested in American Archaeology.

* Events- I'll pass on the information I discover from the various listservs about upcoming events, exhibit openings, re-enactments, pow wows, open houses, etc. as well as the Oregon Archaeology Month calendar. However, if you think your event might be of interest to the magazine, please be sure to send as much information as possible to me directly. Then I can pass it on to the magazine. I might not find out about it via the listservs so it's better to be safe than sorry!

* Newsbriefs- If you would like to compose a brief summary of any new discoveries, technical advances, catastrophes, looting, even legislation, anything you believe might be of interest to the general public and email as a Word doc attachment to me, then I can compile these summaries together and present them to the magazine.

* Media- If you know of any upcoming books, articles, movies, CDs, any type of media about PNW archaeology & cultural heritage that might be of interest to a general reader of archaeology, please email me the details and again, I will compile and present to the magazine.

The magazine is quarterly and the next issue will be Fall 2010. Here's a link to their website-

The Archaeological Conservancy is national non-profit organization that acquires endangered archaeological sites. The Conservancy has preserved over 385 archaeological sites and is interested in acquiring more acquisitions, especially in the Pacific Northwest!

Take a look at their website, especially the pages regarding acquisitions and where they work-

and then consider if you know of any sites or areas you believe should be preserved by acquisition.

The Western Region Field Representative, Julie Clark, will be visiting in June and I would like to be able to provide her with information and contacts about wonderful sites in Oregon! Just email me with the information, and especially a contact person, so I can provide to Julie when she visits.

As you can tell, I am very excited about this opportunity to present to the general public the incredible accomplishments, current struggles, and remarkable goals we, as archaeological, tribal, and cultural heritage preservationists, strive to achieve here in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. I hope you will be also and take advantage of this opportunity to "sound your horn" about Oregon's unique and fascinating heritage.

Thanks in advance for your time, efforts, and patience on my behalf, Susan Lynn White
