Course Description
Traditional Cultural Properties, or TCPs, are places in the environment that have special significance to human communities because of their cultural connections-such as indigenous sacred places, traditional hunting and fishing areas, and culturally valued urban neighborhoods. TCPs are often eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and must be managed under the NHPA, as well as under NEPA. This course will help you understand what TCPs are and why they can be so powerfully valued by traditional communities. It covers methods of identifying such properties and stresses ways of managing properties without identifying them, since they are sometimes kept secret by those who value them.
After completion of the workshop, participants will understand:
What TCPs are, in both tangible and legal terms
Different kinds of TCPs, and their management implications
TCP-related case law
Methods of identifying TCPs
How to minimize disclosure of information about TCPs
where their character is sensitive
TCP management problems and opportunities
