History Day, Open House, Music Planned
for Cloud Cap-Tilly Jane Historic District, Mt. Hood National Forest

Parkdale- On Saturday, August 21, 2010, a "History Day Open House" will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at venerable Cloud Cap Inn and Tilly Jane Guard Station. These structures are located within the Cloud Cap-Tilly Jane Historic District and are considered the oldest structures on Mt. Hood dating back to 1889.

The public is invited to look through the buildings, learn their history, and meet with people representing the organizations which care for the facilities today. The event is sponsored by the Hood River Ranger District, Crag Rats Search and Rescue
Organization, Oregon Nordic Club, and the Oregon Snow Shoe Club.

"Old time" musical entertainment will be provided by Paul Crowley, Peny Wallace, Susan Garrett Crowley, Chris Fordonski, and Dana Love at the historic American Legion Amphitheater.

People are advised to bring a picnic lunch and plenty of drinking water. Dogs will not be allowed in the buildings and must be on a leash when walking through the area. The Cloud Cap Road has many water bars across the road to prevent soil erosion, but the water bars also act as speed bumps causing travel up the road to be slow especially for passenger cars.

Due to limited amount of parking space, the public is encouraged to car pool to the event. The adventurous are invited to consider hiking to the Historic District via the Tilly Jane Trail #643. The trail is rated most difficult but is well worth the effort. Normally, recreation passes are required at the Cloud Cap and Tilly Jane Trailheads. However, recreation passes will not be required on Saturday, August 21 during the open house event from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Please contact the Hood River Ranger District for more information at 541-352-6002.
