Sponsored by the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology at Indiana
University and the University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist

Description: The Midwest Lithic Exchange is a forum for which
archaeologists and -flintknappers can come together and share raw lithic
material for the creation of type collections that will assist in the
proper identification and sourcing of stone used by prehistoric cultures
in the Midwest. Participants of this program are encouraged to bring
natural/unmodified lithic samples from known sources that can be
exchanged with others. Each participant that provides lithic samples
for exchange is asked to complete a Raw Material Record Form (see
website below). It is requested that this form be completed prior to
this event, but the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology will
provide documentation resources (e.g., computer, reference material,
maps, and photographic equipment) to record all or any missing data for
each shared lithic sample during the event. Information supplied on
this form and a sample of each lithic source will be stored at the Glenn
A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology as part of its Midwest Lithic
Repository and will be made accessible through an online database, which
is currently under development. This new database will be modeled after
the University of Iowa, Office of the State Archaeologist’s
Lithic<http://www.uiowa.edu/~osa/lithics/> Raw Material
Assemblage<http://www.uiowa.edu/~osa/lithics/>, the Northeast
<http://neld.lib.uconn.edu/> Lithic
Database<http://neld.lib.uconn.edu/>, and other like web sites.

This event is free and attendees are not required to bring lithic
material to participate, but they must be registered for the 2010
Midwest Archaeological Conference in Bloomington, Indiana.
