Dear friends and colleagues,

Please join us for the archaeology presentation on Thursday, Dec. 2nd at
4:00 pm on the campus at Portland State University (Smith Center, Rm
328/329).

Ben Fitzhugh (University of Washington) will present :
Attenuated Interactions: Archaeology of the remote Kuril Islands, NW
Pacific

The remote and geologically active Kuril Islands stretch from northern
Japan to the Kamchatka peninsula and were partially to fully occupied by
maritime foragers for much of the past 7000 years. The Kuril
Biocomplexity Project has explored the history of human 'ecodynamics' in
this remote northwest Pacific region since 2006 to develop a better
understanding of the history of human settlement and of environmental
changes and hazards in this volcanic and tsunami prone subarctic zone.
This research is beginning to shed light on questions of the
paleodemographic history of the archipelago, the resilience of small
scale societies to 'natural disasters', and the role of social networks
in human adaption to remote and vulnerable places. This talk will
summarize some of these findings and seek to generalize insights from
this research to propose a model for the dynamic evolution of social
networks in the Kuril context.

Please note, the talk will be held in SMITH CENTER, Room 328/329

The presentation is hosted by the Anthropology Student Association and
the Department of Anthropology at PSU. It is free and open to the public.

We look forward to seeing you all there.
