Lecture Series

Thursday October 6, 4 pm, Smith 238

Derek Berry
(City Archaeologist, Port Angeles, WA) presents

Archaeological Planning for the Urban Port Angeles Waterfront
As the City of Port Angeles adjusts to the 21st Century and endeavors
to revitalize itself and its waterfront, archaeology has become a
complicating factor in the process. 2004 to 2007 were challenging years
for Port Angeles as it dealt with the failure of the WSDOT Graving Dock
Project and the related challenges that large archaeological villages
and cemeteries bring when discovered on important, urban industrial
lands. Since 2007 the City’s Archaeologist has been called upon to
help the community navigate the web of legal agreements, state
archaeological laws, permitting requirements, public works projects, and
ultimately help plan for and predict how future projects may be impacted
by archaeological discoveries. Join Derek Beery, City of Port Angeles
Archaeologist, for a presentation about predictive modeling, remote
sampling, and compliance archaeology as he discusses how he applies
planning methods to two of the largest municipal projects in city
history as Port Angeles mobilizes to upgrade its combined sewage outfall
system and reinvents its downtown waterfront.
