Noted archaeologist, ethnologist, and artist Dr. Carolyn Boyd will talk
about the “Archaic Codex: The White Shaman Panel of the Lower Pecos
Canyonlands “ at the November 1, 2011 lecture sponsored by the Oregon
Archaeological Society. The White Shaman panel is an archaic codex-a
sacred mythological and historical document that contains many of the
same concepts scholars identified in the few graphic and beautifully
illustrated prehistoric and early historic books (termed “codices”)
of the Mixtec and Aztec that survive to the present day.

Today, travelers to the Lower Pecos Canyonlands can view large rock art
panels that bands of hunter-gatherers left behind 4000 years ago on the
canyon walls and cliff overhangs. The rock art panels of the Lower
Pecos are pictorial narratives detailing prescriptions for ritual and a
constellation of myths and histories that are still practiced today in
parts of Mesoamerica and the American Southwest.

Dr. Carolyn Boyd is the Executive Director and co-founder of SHUMLA, an
archeological research and educational nonprofit corporation formed to
connect people of all ages with the land and their cultural heritage.
She serves as Adjunct Professor at Texas State University, Research
Fellow at the Center for Arts and Symbolism of the Ancient Americas in
San Marcos, Texas and the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory in
Austin, and is the Principal Investigator on the Lower Pecos Rock Art
Recording and Preservation Project.

The presentation is at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) at
7:45 PM, and is free and open to the public. The talk is preceded at 7
PM by a general business meeting, which is also open to the public.
