Would you put this out to the list-serve? Many thanks, Virginia

Portland State University’s Department of Anthropology and the
Anthropology Student Association invite you to attend an upcoming
First
Thursday presentation, *Feb 2, 4 pm. *

* *

Dr. Sarah L. Sterling (Portland State University) will present,

“Integrating the seismic and occupational chronologies at
Tse-whit-zen, a long-term K’lallam settlement on the shores of Port
Angeles Harbor, Washington State”

In 2003 workers under contract from the Washington Department of
Transportation (WSDOT) began excavating a dry dock in Port Angeles
Harbor,
on the southern shoreline of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The
construction
footprint was dug into portions of the ancient S’Klallam village of
Tse-whit-zen; one of the largest known precontact villages in
Washington
State. Fifty-one radiocarbon samples collected during archaeological
mitigation of the site indicate continuous occupation of the village
beginning around 1700 years ago until the time of European contact.
Tse-whit-zen is situated in the midst of the Cascadia subduction zone
and
apparent gaps in the radiocarbon record of village occupation are
broadly
synchronous with great earthquakes in the region. In this presentation,
I
will discuss the current state of knowledge about the relationship
between
the occupational and seismic chronology at Tse-whit-zen, and how
upcoming
field work in the vicinity of the site will help further resolve our
understanding of the past and future of this geologically dynamic
shoreline.

The presentation will be in Smith Memorial Center, Room 294. We
look
forward to seeing you here.
