Four years of University of Oregon and Bureau of Land Management
research archaeology in Harney County has culminated in important
discoveries that may indicate Clovis occupation sites. “At the
Crossroads: Advances and Transitions in Research on Paleoindian Sites in
the Northern Great Basin” is the title of the lecture by Dr. Pat
O-Grady on March 6, 2012 sponsored by the Oregon Archaeological Society.
O’Grady’s 2011 field excavations found a deep, artifact-bearing
gravel layer underneath
a Paleoindian stemmed point occupation site that may signal the
location of buried Clovis deposits. This discovery goes far towards
explaining the Clovis points collected from the surface of the site.
Dr. O’Grady, with the University of Oregon Department of
Anthropology, received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from that
institution. His primary research interests include hunter-gatherer
subsistence practices and early Holocene cultural trends in the Great
Basin of western North America, zoo-archaeology, and patterns of human
settlement and mobility in the Great Basin. He taught the 2011 field
school at the Harney County clovis site and is currently planning
excavations at an associated rock shelter during the 2012 field season.
This presentation will be offered at the Oregon Museum of Science and
Industry (OMSI) auditorium, follows the Oregon Archaeological Society
general business meeting that starts at 7 PM, and is free and open to
the public.
