 Primary Responsibilities:
 
This position is responsible for the preservation and protection of the
cultural resources of the Burns Paiute Tribe.
 Essential Duties:
 
The position must meet the following definition of a "Qualified
Archaeologist," which means a person who has the following
qualifications given in ORS 390.235:
                  (A) A post-graduate degree in archaeology,
anthropology, history, classics or other germane discipline with a
specialization in archaeology, or a documented equivalency of such a
degree;
                  (B) Twelve weeks of supervised experience in basic
archaeological field research, including both survey and excavation and
four weeks of laboratory analysis or curating; and
                  (C) Has designed and executed an archaeological
study, as evidenced by a Master of Arts or Master of Science thesis, or
report equivalent in scope and quality, dealing with archaeological
field research.
 
The position must also meet the following definition for a qualified
applicant for a permit issued under the authority of the Archaeological
Resources Protection Act given in 43 CFR 7.8, pertaining to the
Archaeological Resources Protection Act: 
(1) The applicant is appropriately qualified, as evidenced by training,
education, and/or experience, and possesses demonstrable competence in
archaeological theory and methods, and in collecting, handling,
analyzing, evaluating, and reporting archaeological data, relative to
the type and scope of the work proposed, and also meets the following
minimum qualifications:
(i) A graduate degree in anthropology or archaeology, or equivalent
training and experience;
(ii) The demonstrated ability to plan, equip, staff, organize, and
supervise activity of the type and scope proposed;
(iii) The demonstrated ability to carry research to completion, as
evidenced by timely completion of theses, research reports, or similar
documents;
(iv) Completion of at least 16 months of professional experience and/or
specialized training in archaeological field, laboratory, or library
research, administration, or management, including at least 4 months
experience and/or specialized training in the kind of activity the
individual proposes to conduct under authority of a permit; and
(v) Applicants proposing to engage in historical archaeology should
have had at least one year of experience in research concerning
archaeological resources of the historic period. Applicants proposing to
engage in prehistoric archaeology should have had at least one year of
experience in research concerning archaeological resources of the
prehistoric period.
 
Additional Duties
 Responsible for identifying, documenting, and protecting significant
historic and prehistoric cultural properties of interest to the tribe.
Keeps detailed notes of activities that may be impacting cultural
sites.
Provides preservation specific planning assistance to Tribal
departments, federal and state officials, local government, and resource
management specialists.
Monitors activities conducted by other Tribal Programs to ensure that
applicable Federal and State laws, regulations, and acts are followed in
the protection of the Tribe’s cultural resources.
Collaborates with archaeologists specific to site evaluation and
assessment on tribally owned land.
Responsible for planning, implementing and directing a Tribal
Preservation program under the guidelines of Tribal policies and
procedures and the National Historic Preservation Act within
reservation.
Training and coordination concerning the Native American Graves
Protection and Repatriation Act.
Assists with cultural preservation education to the community and
staff.
Develops and writes, as well as participates in, Federal and State
grants.
Prepares and submits archaeological reports within time designations.
Researches funding and other resources for program activities.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

This position also requires the ability to obtain certification as a
Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) with the Register of
Professional Archaeologists.
 
This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with
federal, state, county, and local agencies to establish and implement
procedures for the protection of cultural resources.  This position
requires the ability to work well with Tribal members of all ages, the
general public, private landowners, and regulatory agencies.  Excellent
oral and written communication skills including technical, regulatory,
and persuasive writing skills are essential to the position.  The
position requires knowledge of federal laws protecting archaeological
and cultural sites under the National Historic Preservation Act, the
Archeological Resources Protection Act, the Native American Graves
Protection and Repatriation Act, etc., as well as applicable state and
local laws and rules. This position requires the ability to work well in
rough terrain and inclement weather.  This position requires a
fundamental knowledge of Tribal history and culture.
 
Additional Education and Experience (desired, but not required):
 Working knowledge of ArcGis, with the ability to create project and
site record maps, create and populate cultural geodatabases.
Working knowledge or experience with accessioning and curation of
archaeological artifacts.
Knowledge of Great Basin archaeology and/or experience working with
Great Basin Tribes.

Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the

environment is usually moderately quiet.
Drivers License & Insurance Requirement
 
Must have and maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license, qualify for the
Tribe’s vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle
insurance. Adequate transportation and eligibility to operate government
vehicles required.  This position may include providing transportation
for Native and non-Native American clients in Tribally owned or the
employee’s private motor vehicle(s).

failure to successfully pass a drug and alcohol test may result in
