Dr. Jon Erlandson is the featured speaker for the May 7, 2013 lecture sponsored by the Oregon Archaeological Society and titled Evidence of First American Coastal Migration: Findings form the Channel Islands. Erlandson will focus on his current research related to the Paleocoastal occupants of California's Channel Islands, dating between about 13,000 and 10,000 years ago. Erlandson will discuss the implications for understanding the peopling of the Americas, the coastal migration theory, the kelp highway hypothesis, and possible early cultural connections in the Far West and around the Pacific Rim. 
Erlandson is the current Executive Director of the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History, is a professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oregon and holds the Knight Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Endowed Chair, College of Arts and Sciences. He has been the primary investigator of a myriad of paleoarchaeological coastal projects in California, Oregon, Alaska, and Iceland. His research and teaching interests include the development of maritime societies, historical ecology in coastal environments, human evolution and migrations, the peopling of the Americas, and the history of seafaring. Erlandson is the author of numerous books and journal publications. The presentation, at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), is free and open to the public. A general business meeting begins at 7 PM, followed by the lecture.
