The Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation is seeking to fill two (2) non-permanent Assistant State Physical Anthropologist positions.

Appointment Lengths and Locations:
Olympia, Washington - 12 month position
Beverly, Washington - 6 month position

Duties:

Under the direction of the State Physical Anthropologist, this position performs identification, removal and re-interment of human skeletal remains. This position may also determine whether additional remains or archaeological deposits may be in a project area once an initial set of remains is identified, coordinate findings with the cemetery database manager, and fill out site forms. Other duties include:

Assists with the completion of case reports, data entry, site form completion, and official letter notifications;

Assists with the administration of the grant program reimbursing property owners for the cost of the removal of human remains when the State Physical Anthropologist is unable to conduct removal activities themselves;

Works and interacts positively with the archaeological staff, Cemeteries Database and GIS cartographer, tribal governments, state agencies, and local governments including law enforcement and county coroners/medical examiners;

Visits discoveries, provides advice, expertise, field analysis, fieldwork, reporting, and oversight as necessary;

Provides locational information to relevant staff within the agency regarding non-forensic human skeletal remains and works with those staff to correctly record human remains finds;

Prepares draft summary reports of human skeletal remains cases;

Utilizes standard archaeological excavation and recording techniques, excavates non-forensic human skeletal remains;

Utilizes the Human Remains Database, records information relevant to current human remains cases and uses the program to generate notification letters to affected tribes; tracks responses to those notifications in the case file and database.

Work is performed in a standard office and lab setting in Olympia, Washington. Extensive travel (in and out of state) with occasional overnight stays is required. Work hours are typically Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm, some flexibility may be required to meet business needs.


Qualifications:

Required:


Master's degree in anthropology or archaeology and have experience in human osteology or other relevant aspects of physical anthropology.
Must meet the definition for a professional archaeologist as defined in RCW 27.53.030 (state law).

Must have experience in preparing professional reports summarizing the analysis and documentation of human skeletal remains, and education and experience in the identification and treatment of human remains.

Expertise in archaeological field methods and theory.

Must have a valid Washington driver's license and will be expected to travel statewide on short notice.

Advanced knowledge of Section 106, RCW 27.53, RCW 27.44, RCW 68.60, State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA),  and all federal and state laws and regulations as they apply to archaeological properties, cemeteries, and human remains.
