Portland, OR (Oregon Archaeological Society):
Flintknapping expert Dan Stueber is the featured speaker for the January 6, 2015 lecture: Glass Buttes, Oregon: 14,000 Years of Continuous Use sponsored by the Oregon Archaeological Society.

For at least fourteen millennia Glass Buttes, one of the largest obsidian sources in Oregon, has been a source of high quality toolstone for Native American flintknappers, including Clovis toolmakers. In the last century non-native historic and modern flintknappers as well as rock hounds have also used this resource for its abundant, colorful and high quality obsidian. This presentation will discuss the quantity and quality of Glass Buttes obsidian, archaeological work that has been done there, the prehistoric and modern use of the resource, new archaeological findings, it's importance as an archaeological resource, and the Bureau of Land Management's protection plan for this valuable resource.

Dan Stueber has served as Lithic Technology Specialist at Archaeological Investigations Northwest (AINW) since 1991 and has been responsible for the technological lithic analysis for hundreds of sites in the Pacific Northwest. Dan has been a student of anthropology since taking the Becoming Human course at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History with Dr. Donald Johannsen and Richard Leakey in 1980. He has studied flintknapping and lithic technology since 1982 with Dr. John Fagan and Dr. Errett Callahan, and has served as teaching assistant for both.

He has studied and replicated stone tool technologies from around the world, and conducted research in New Zealand and Denmark, and at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. His extensive teaching experience includes numerous flintknapping classes, public educational programs, and demonstrations. Dan serves as instructor for the summer semester, hands-on, Living Technologies course at the University of Victoria, British Columbia.

The presentation is at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) at 7:45 PM, and is free and open to the public. The talk is preceded by a general business meeting beginning at 7 PM, which is also open to the public
