The Mill Conference Center, 3201 Tremont Street, Coos Bay, OR

Activity Name: Exploring Remote Sensing Techniques for Cemetery Mapping Workshop

Activity Description: As remote sensing or archaeogeophysical techniques become a more common tool for historic
cemetery mangers, there is a greater need to understand which methods are appropriate for each
cemetery location. This workshop compares the abilities and limitations of ground‐penetrating RADAR
(GPR), magnetometry, metal detectors, conductivity, and resistivity to help cemetery managers
determine the best method to use, optimal conditions for their use, the order in which they should be
used, and the cost. Examples of how these non‐destructive techniques have been used in the Pacific
Northwest to locate and map cemeteries and their varying degrees of success will be presented. An
afternoon field demonstration of the techniques will be conducted at Marshfield Cemetery.
