Try free samples of native foods and historic beer at PSU's Archaeology Roadshow
________________________________
(Portland, Ore.) May 11, 2015 - Taste native fish from tribal fisheries, sample mead and beer brewed from historic recipes and celebrate archaeology from this region and beyond May 30 at Portland State University's fourth annual Archaeology Roadshow.
The event is free and open to the public and will be held at from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 30 at PSU's Hoffman Hall, next to the Portland Farmers Market, at 1833 S.W. 11th Ave.
The theme this year is "The Archaeology of Food." You can try local fishes, such as smoked eulachon and sucker provided by tribal fisheries; sip mead and beer brewed from recipes in the Oregon Hops and Brewing archives; learn about the real Paleodiet; and meet Wes Cowan of the PBS show "History Detectives," formerly of "Antiques Roadshow." There will be a variety of kid-friendly activities, exhibits, hands-on demonstrations, history projects and tool making. Presentations will be hosted by archaeologists and community members with local and traditional knowledge from universities, federal and state agencies, tribes, archaeology companies, and non-profit organizations.
"Most people are fascinated by archaeology but think they need to visit faraway places to experience it," says Virginia Butler, PSU professor and lead organizer of the Roadshow. "However, archaeology 'happens' right here. The Roadshow is a great way for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about our shared heritage-in our region and beyond-and have fun at the same time."
A panel of experts in archaeology, paleontology and geology will be on hand to identify the personal artifacts visitors bring. Stone, bone, woven, plant and historical items are welcome. Please do not bring live plants or animals. No appraisals will be given; the Archaeology Roadshow does not authenticate or value items for sale.
Nearly 500 people attended last year's Roadshow, organized by Portland State University's Anthropology Department, with help from over 100 volunteers, students and community partners.
