[OR_Archaeology] Position Announcement

The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is seeking potential candidates for a permanent GS-0193-11 District Archaeologist  position located at the Gold Beach Ranger District, Oregon.   This position is supervised by the District Ranger and supports two ranger districts on the western side of the forest: Gold Beach and Powers. Both of the districts have a busy timber program.  The position also works forest wide as needed to meet Forest priorities.  Duties will include field and office work.   Since the duty location is located ~3 hours from the Supervisors' Office in Medford, some travel will be required for  field work and project/forest coordination.   Approximately 1300 cultural sites are identified on the Siskiyou side of the forest representing a variety of archaeological and historical resources, dating from the Late Paleo-Early Archaic Period  to the present.    Many of the recorded sites and structures date to the historic period and include Forest Service administrative buildings and structures, homestead cabins, railroad features, mines and mining features,  post-contact habitation sites, , and  battle sites from the Rogue River Indian War.  The office is located at the Gold Beach Ranger District Administrative compound  built by the C.C.C..   The compound is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This position is a great opportunity to work with a variety of cultural resources, working with Tribes, maintaining and building relationships with our preservation partners and to be part of our heritage/cultural resource program.
