State Archaeologist - Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Archeological Survey at the University of Oklahoma seeks applications for the State Archaeologist position.  This is a 12-month appointment as renewable term research faculty within the College of Arts & Sciences.  The primary responsibility of the State Archaeologist is administering the Survey's Community Assistance Program, which is responsible for review and compliance on matters pertaining to prehistoric sites.  As such, this work is closely coordinated with the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office housed at the Oklahoma Historical Society.  This position also entails supervising graduate assistants, coordinating with an administrative assistant, and overseeing and obtaining grant funding related to the position.
In addition, the State Archaeologist will be expected to pursue grants to fund and then oversee the digitization of the State's archaeological site file.  The State Archaeologist will participate in public outreach programs and work with avocational groups such as the Oklahoma Anthropological Society and other Oklahoma citizens to promote archaeology.  In addition to the principal responsibilities of review, compliance, and advocacy, the State Archaeologist will conduct independent research on Oklahoma archaeology and aid other research staff at the Survey in furthering their research goals.
The required qualifications are:
1. Ph.D. in anthropology with specialization in archaeology, cultural resource management, or closely-related disciplines
2. General knowledge of Oklahoma, Southern Plains, and/or Southeast U.S. archaeology
3. Formal training or substantial experience in cultural resources management, with a special emphasis on knowledge of and experience working within Section 106 and other applicable cultural resource management laws
4. Ability to organize, coordinate, and administer reports, data, and project information
5. Demonstrated ability to produce clear, accurate, readable reports of work conducted within a specific time frame
6. Demonstrated ability to work with avocational archaeologists and the general public
The desired qualifications are:
1. Knowledge of geographic information (GIS) and database management software
2. Demonstrated ability to obtain research grants and support funding for research
3. Interest in archaeological research in and relevant to Oklahoma
4. Ability to present archaeological findings and information to the public
