PORTLAND, OR-For several years, Dr. Robert Boyd has been researching and writing Before Portland, a history and culture study of the Native peoples (Upper Chinook and others) of Multnomah, Clark, Clackamas and east Columbia counties, from circa 1430 (the Bonneville Landslide) to 1856, when most survivors were removed from their homelands to reservations.

The book will be Dr. Boyd's third in a series on Chinookan peoples, after People of The Dalles: the Indians of Wascopam Mission (1996, 2005), and Chinookan Peoples of the Lower Columbia (2013, 2015; co-edited with Cathlapotle archaeologist Kenneth Ames and Chinook Nation chair Tony Johnson). Both previous books were selected as "Choice outstanding academic titles" by the American Library Association, representing the top 10% of ALA reviews. Before Portland will also be the city's entry in the new historical genre of "urban indigenous histories," like Native Seattle: histories from the crossing-over place (2007) and Mannahatta: a natural history of New York (2009).

On March 1, 2016 Dr. Boyd signed an advance contract with the University of Washington Press, with a manuscript due date of May 1, 2017 and projected publication in 2018. Previous work on the project was supported by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the Grand Ronde Tribe. For the final months Dr. Boyd is seeking contributions from the people of metropolitan Portland/Vancouver (and interested parties elsewhere) to allow him to work full-time on the project until the manuscript is due.

Details on Before Portland -scope, work completed so far, work yet to do-are on Dr. Boyd's website, www.RobertTBoyd.com<http://www.roberttboyd.com/>. Please contribute to the Kickstarter campaign so we can make Before Portland a reality, and reintroduce the remarkable history and culture of the "people before Portland" to the present inhabitants of the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond!
