The Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA) and the
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) will be running an
archaeological field school this July in Gold Beach in Curry County on the
southern Oregon coast. We will be excavating at the Miner's Fort site,
where pioneer militia were besieged by Native American forces during the
spring of 1856, and the Geisel Monument, a pioneer homestead burned down in
February, 1856 during the Rogue River War.

As part of this project, each Wednesday in July, we will host a public
lecture at the Curry County Fairgrounds in Gold Beach, 6:30pm. The talks
include:

*July 6*: Mark Tveskov, SOULA: *The Archaeology of the Rogue River War*
*July 13*: Ben Truwe, Southern Oregon Historical Society, Digging the
Archives: The Documentary Record of Oregon's Early Years
*July 20*: Robert Kentta, Siletz Tribe: * Siletz Tribal History*
*July 27*: Patricia Whereat Phillips: Confederated Tribes of Coos Lower
Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians: *Ethnobotany of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and
Siuslaw Indians.*

We will also be hosting open houses at the excavations for the community on
Sunday *July 10* and Sunday *July 24* from 10am-2pm, starting at the Geisel
Monument State Heritage Site on Hwy 101.
