Portland, OR- Mound Building Mississippian Culture in the Eastern Woodlands -
Free Archaeology Talk at OMSI

Dr. John Kelly of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri will kick off the Oregon Archaeological Society's 2016-2017 lecture series on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. His lecture, "Mississippian Culture and the Origins of Urbanism in the Eastern Woodlands of North America" will focus on what archaeologists call Mississippian Culture (about AD 1050). Beginning with the ancient city of Cahokia, Kelly will examine the larger Mississippian world and its role in understanding the beginnings of urbanism in Eastern North America.

The rediscovery of a significant Mississippian mound center in East St. Louis, is part of a project Kelly is now involved with. Portions of eight mounds have been identified as well as numerous prehistoric buildings and other features related to this once vibrant center. Preservation efforts of the site are being conducted in conjunction with the Archaeological Conservancy and Heart Lands Conservancy.

The free, public presentation is at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). OMSI is located at 1945 Southeast Water Avenue, Portland, OR 97214. A general business meeting begins at 7 PM, followed by the lecture at about 7:45 PM.
