News Release from the Maritime Archaeological Society

Where: Barbey Maritime Center at the Columbia River Maritime Museum (CRMM), Astoria OR

When: February 11&12, 2017 9:00am-3:00pm

The Maritime Archaeological Society (MAS) will hold its annual membership meeting at the beautiful Barbey Maritime Center, which is part of the Columbia River Maritime Museum (CRMM), in Astoria Oregon. We are so grateful to our partners and friends at CRMM for donating the use of this facility. Please join us for two days filled with exciting presentations, including updates on MAS maritime archeology projects, and an entire day of member training opportunities.  The MAS project presentations and keynote address are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

On Saturday February 11th, annual reports and project updates will begin at 9am followed by the keynote speaker at 11am. The day will wrap up with a behind the scenes tour of the Columbia River Maritime Museum Boat Hall and Artifact Storage on Saturday afternoon, by MAS members.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Tom Beasley , Executive Director of Vancouver chapter of the Underwater Archaeological Society of British Columbia  (UASBC). He will present “Underwater Archaeological Society of British Columbia: 40+ years of Adventure and Discovery Underwater” and “Tonquin: Solving the 200 year old shipwreck Mystery.”

Sunday February 12 will be dedicated to training courses for MAS members. Basic training will begin with an intro to Maritime Archaeology including Maritime Archaeology Laws and Regulations and will be followed by more advanced hands-on volunteer survey training in the afternoon. For members who have already completed basic training, a remote sensor class will cover planning and operations of magnetometer, side scan sonar, Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and 3D laser scanners.

The training sessions are free for MAS members. We will be happy to accept your new or renewing membership applications at the meeting. RSVP is not required (but appreciated for planning purposes).
