Hello all--
Next week is rich with opportunities for those interested in archaeology and heritage..

Join us for Archaeology First Thursdays at PSU on May 4, Smith 294 at 4 pm.

Terry Ozbun, Jo Reese, & John Fagan (AINW) will join David Harrelson (Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde) to present,

"Award-Winning Collaboration in Cultural Resource Management: Lake Oswego - Tigard Water Partnership Project"

AINW (Archaeological Investigations Northwest, Inc.) will provide an overview of the Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Partnership, which involved documentation of multiple significant archaeological and historical resources including the Burnett Site - the oldest known archaeological site in the Portland Basin. Cultural resource work involved collaborations among many people and organizations, including Portland State University faculty and students as well as the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The Partnership won the 2016 American Cultural Resources Association Industry Award. Grand Ronde Cultural Resources staff will share ways place-based knowledge and tribal needs were incorporated into planning and execution of the large capital improvement project within the tribes' traditional homelands. Information on the consultation process including advice on creating desirable outcomes and lasting value will be shared.

This is event is free and open to all. https://www.pdx.edu/anthropology/home

On Friday, May 5, 7 pm, PSU Department of Anthropology and University Studies are hosting a showing of "The Promised Land", 5th Ave Cinema, PSU Campus.

Promised Land is an award-winning social justice documentary that follows two tribes in the Pacific Northwest: the Duwamish and the Chinook, as they fight for the restoration of treaty rights they've long been denied. In following their story, the film examines a larger problem in the way that the government and society still looks at tribal sovereignty. Please come for the film and post-film discussion with Chinook Indian Nation elders; Duwamish Tribe Councilmember, Ken Workman; PSU Professor Kenneth Ames; and the filmmakers. Suggested donation at the door: $5. A portion of the night's proceeds goes to supporting the tribe.
