[OR_Archaeology] Message from the SAA

Dear SAA member:

Today the BLM is proceeding to auction leases to 41,000 acres in southeastern Utah for oil and gas exploration. This area is extraordinarily rich with archaeological sites.

We are urging all of our members to contact the Department of Interior and express their opposition to this action, which will endanger irreplaceable prehistoric cultural resources.

As we've been told by archaeologists in the region, there are at least 10 Chaco Great Houses within 2 miles of the lease parcels, including at least two Great House sites within the proposed lease boundaries. In addition, at least 4 prehistoric road segments are adjacent to or within the parcels. The presence of these sites demonstrate the strong likelihood that there are more ancient roads and ceremonial Great Houses within the affected area. At the very least, further archaeological investigation is necessary before economic development takes place.
